The government is considering different options for how councils in our area could be structured

The consultation runs from 5 February to 26 March

Proposed Options

  1. One Unitary Council
    Proposed by Oxfordshire County Council
A single council covering: Cherwell, Oxford City, South Oxfordshire, Vale of White Horse & West Oxfordshire.
  2. Two Unitary Councils
Proposed by Cherwell District Council, South Oxfordshire District Council, Vale of White Horse District Council & West Oxfordshire District Council
  • Oxford & Shires – Cherwell, Oxford City & West Oxfordshire
  • Ridgeway – South Oxfordshire, Vale of White Horse + West Berkshire
  1. Three Unitary Councils
    Proposed by Oxford City Council
  • Greater Oxford – Oxford + parts of Cherwell, South Oxfordshire & Vale of White Horse
  • Northern Oxfordshire – rest of Cherwell + West Oxfordshire
  • Ridgeway – rest of South Oxfordshire & Vale + West Berkshire

The chosen model is expected to be fully operational by 2028, replacing the current council structures.
